WHO Warns Of “Fake News” After Elon Musk Pandemic Treaty Tweet:- WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference, “The claim that the agreement will cede power to the WHO is false. This is fake news. Countries will decide what the agreement says.”

The World Health Organization on Thursday warned against “fake news” after Twitter boss Elon Musk tweeted that countries “should not cede authority” to the WHO amid talks on a new pandemic treaty.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference, “The claim that the agreement will cede power to the WHO is false. This is fake news. Countries will decide what the agreement says.”

Mr Tedros did not mention Elon Musk by name, but earlier on Thursday he also tweeted a response to the Twitter chief, insisting that “countries are not giving sovereignty to the WHO.”

“The Pandemic Agreement will not change this. The Agreement will help countries better protect against the pandemic. It will help us better protect people, whether they live in rich or poor countries,” he tweeted.

The exchange came as talks progressed towards a global agreement aimed at helping prevent and rapidly respond to future pandemics, with a move expected to go to a vote among WHO member states in May 2024.

The deal could address the need for quick information exchange between countries facing global health emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and could aim to prevent the wide disparity seen in access to vaccines during that crisis. .

The agreement should also call on countries to boost national, regional and global preparedness and address systems to address pandemic risks.

Even before discussions began, however, the WHO was battling disinformation and conspiracy theories surrounding the negotiations and future agreement, including allegations that the organization was planning to take over health policies in sovereign nations.

With the agreement under discussion, “no country will cede any sovereignty to the WHO,” Mr Tedros insisted to reporters on Thursday.

“Countries will decide what the agreement says, and countries alone. And countries will implement the agreement according to their own national laws.

“If any politician, business person, or anyone is confused about what the Pandemic Agreement is or is not, we will be more than happy to discuss and explain it.”
