Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA), struck a foreboding tone on Twitter on Monday when he mentioned a global extinction that ended the Cretaceous era.

Musk claimed that the events that hastened the extinction of the dinosaurs and produced a large population of mammals on the planets may occur once more.

The article that Musk linked discussed the emergence of mammals after a six-mile wide (10 km) asteroid.

that impacted modern-day Mexico with the force of more than a billion nuclear bombs wiped out the dinosaurs.

Musk supports colonising Mars to increase the "probable lifespan" of humanity.

"I think we've really only got this little candle of consciousness like a small light in the emptiness," he stated in April.

We don't want to extinguish that tiny candle in the great darkness.

Mars may be a planet that needs work, but it has a lot of potential.

On Monday, normal trading in Tesla shares ended 1.1% lower at $284.82 while extended trading ended 0.4% higher.
