According to reports, the Federal Aviation Administration has scheduled the Starship’s orbital test flight for Monday, April 17.
However, SpaceX’s ability to proceed with the launch depends on obtaining a launch license before that date.
Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and founder of SpaceX, announced on Sunday via Twitter that the Starship rocket is ready for launch, pending regulatory approval.
The Starship, which is said to be the most powerful rocket in the world, is intended for human spaceflight missions to the Moon and, ultimately, to Mars.
The Starship is a two-stage rocket system that includes a Super Heavy launch vehicle booster and a Starship spacecraft.
It has a maximum thrust of 3,991 tonnes, which is 15% greater than that of NASA’s Apollo Moon rocket, the Saturn V.
Under NASA’s Artemis program, SpaceX has been awarded a contract to develop the Starship Human Landing System. This system would allow astronauts to land on the Moon, as part of NASA’s initiative to return humans to the lunar surface.
Elon Musk has already sold seats on the Starship spacecraft, including to Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa.
Maezawa plans to lead the first crewed mission to the Moon, as part of his dearMoon initiative, and will bring along eight artists on the journey.
Jared Isaacman, an American billionaire, is collaborating with SpaceX on his privately-led Polaris program, which involves a series of space missions.
Isaacman will be the commander of the Polaris III mission, which is slated to be the first crewed flight on the Starship rocket.
However, SpaceX must first demonstrate the safety of the Starship rocket by successfully reaching orbit before any missions can commence.
The successful completion of the Starship’s upcoming orbital test flight would mark a significant milestone for SpaceX and represent a crucial step toward making the Starship spacecraft a viable means of transportation.
Over the years, SpaceX has devoted substantial resources to the development of the Starship rocket, and notable progress has been achieved in the past year to advance towards a successful orbital test flight.
On January 24th, SpaceX completed a vital fuelling test for the Starship rocket, which was a key prerequisite to conducting an orbital test flight.
During the test, the Starship rocket was filled with approximately 4.6 million kilograms of propellant.
During the test flight, the Starship spacecraft will launch from SpaceX’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. About 170 seconds into the flight, the booster will detach from the spacecraft as part of the test.
Following separation, the booster will undergo a partial return and make a landing in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 32km offshore.
Meanwhile, the Starship spacecraft will continue on its flight path, traveling through the Florida Straits as part of the orbital test.
After reaching orbit, the Starship spacecraft will carry out a powered, targeted, soft-ocean landing. The landing will take place approximately 100 kilometers off the northwest coast of Kauai, which is one of the Hawaiian islands.

However, SpaceX is building multiple Starship vehicles at its launch site in South Texas and plans to launch them in quick succession over the coming months. Musk has stated that there is an 80% chance that one of them will reach orbit this year.
