Just In: Elon Musk Is Planning To Build A Town In Texas For His Employees:- According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Elon Musk is planning to set up a city in Texas, United States, where his employees employed in various organizations can live and work.
According to the outlet, these organizations have acquired at least 3,500 acres near Austin and are trying to incorporate a town called Snailbrook, which is likely a reference to the mascot of Mr. Musk’s tunneling company, The Boring Company.
County deeds and other land records are referenced in the report, along with emails from the city and county, firm internal correspondence, state licensing data, and interviews with landowners and municipal and county officials.
The report claims Mr. Musk wants his workers at the primary manufacturing sites for his firms Tesla, The Boring Company, and SpaceX, all located close to Austin, to be able to “live in new homes with below-market rents”.
Over 100 homes will be built as part of the Snailbrook project, as well as neighborhood amenities including a pool and a sports field.
Mr. Musk and his staff have described the vision for the city as “like a Texas utopia with the Colorado River”.
Mr. Musk, his former girlfriend who is the architectural designer to singers Grimes, Kanye West, and Mr. West have discussed several times over the past year what Musk’s city might look like, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The report said those talks included broad ideas and some visual mock-ups, but did not result in concrete plans.
Due to difficulties with California’s coronavirus-related restrictions, Mr. Musk indicated in 2020 that Tesla’s corporate headquarters and his residence would move from California to Texas.
In Austin, Tesla also unveiled a new Gigafactory production plant last year. It should be noted that both SpaceX and The Boring Company have sites in Texas.
According to an advertisement for employees seen by the WSJ, Boring Company employees could apply for a home last year, with rents starting at about $800 a month for a two- or three-bedroom. But if an employee quits or is fired, he or she will have to vacate the house within 30 days, the report further said.
