Elon Musk’s attack on Biden’s Covid advisor Fauci is “disgusting”: White House:- The White House has condemned social media attacks against Anthony Fauci after Twitter owner Elon Musk posted a tweet mocking Biden’s COVID advisor Anthony Fauci.
Washington: The White House on Monday condemned billionaire Elon Musk’s demand for US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci, a figure of scorn for many, to be prosecuted over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“These are incredibly dangerous, these personal attacks that we’re seeing,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in response to Musk’s weekend tweets, which later went viral.
“They’re disgusting and they’re divorced from reality,” she said. Twitter owner Musk took to the site on Sunday to urge punishment for Fauci, who spearheaded the government’s approach to the pandemic in the country in early 2020.
“My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci,” Musk said, taunting the growing practice for people to indicate their preferred gender pronouns.
Musk also posted a meme in which Fauci told US President Joe Biden, “Just another lockdown, my king,” in an apparent criticism of the coronavirus mitigation measures initially taken in parts of the country in the first year of the pandemic.
Conservatives including former President Donald Trump have made Fauci the focus of their criticisms of the government campaign to battle Covid, and he has faced death threats and a security team assigned to protect him.
“These personal attacks that we’re seeing on Dr. Fauci and other public health professionals are also dangerous,” Jean-Pierre said.
He said, “Dr. Fauci has served under seven Republican and Democratic presidents. We cannot forget that… His work on infectious diseases, from HIV AIDS to COVID, has saved countless lives.”
“We are fortunate, I must say, that he has dedicated his career and his life and his extraordinary talent to the public health of America.”
Republican lawmakers have vowed to grill Fauci since taking control of the House of Representatives in January, repeatedly locking horns with the top immunologist over Covid vaccines, mask mandates, and other issues related to the pandemic.
Fauci, 81, is scheduled to step down this month from his roles as Biden’s chief medical adviser in the government as well as director of the National Institute for Allergy and infectious Diseases, which he led since 1984.
In what was likely his final White House appearance in November, Fauci dismissed the spread of bad health advice online and said the hardest thing to do in America’s fight against Covid was the country’s polarization along political lines.
