Elon Musk Says Bill Gates’ Understanding Of AI Is “Limited”:- Billionaire Elon Musk took a dig at fellow billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates over his knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI). He insisted that Mr. Gates has a “limited” understanding of AI.
This was in response to a tweet by Sandy Kory, who praised the leadership of Mr. Gates at Microsoft and his approach toward AI. “‘I’d been meeting with the team from OpenAI since 2016…” –from Bill Gates’ essay, The Age of AI Has Begun. It’s big when someone like Gates is so bullish on AI. Also notable that MSFT has been tracking this so closely for so long,” he said.
Mr. Kory was referring to a long, 3,639-word essay the billionaire wrote on his blog titled “The Age of A.I. Has Begun”. He wrote about how humanity was waiting for another great revolution. Mr. Gates discussed the potential impact of AI on employment, health care, and education.
According To Elon Musk
“As computing power gets cheaper, GPT’s ability to express ideas will increasingly be like having a white-collar worker available to help you with various tasks. Microsoft describes this as having a co-pilot. Fully incorporated into products like Office, AI will enhance your work-for example by helping with writing emails and managing your inbox,” the blog read.
Responding to the same, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said, “I remember the early meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was limited. Still is.”
According to a report in Fortune, Mr. Musk started working with OpenAI in 2015. He was one of the company’s early investors, which is a possible reason why he attended “early meetings” with the Microsoft co-founder.
He left the company in 2018 due to a potential conflict of interest arising from Tesla’s own artificial intelligence research.
In recent times, there has been a lot of discussion about the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), and Elon Musk has been particularly vocal on this topic.
He has expressed concerns about the AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing, and Google’s Bard, which have become popular in recent times.
On the other hand, Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has been optimistic about the future of AI and has stated that tools like ChatGPT will play a crucial role in enhancing our work lives.
Bill Gates’ recent blog post about ‘the age of AI’ has received a lot of attention and has been widely discussed in the media. However, the owner of Twitter has criticized Gates, claiming that his understanding of AI is limited and has not evolved much over the years.
What did Elon Musk Say?
Elon Musk recently responded to a tweet from a user who was discussing the importance of having someone like Bill Gates who is optimistic about the future of AI. The user had quoted a line from Gates’ recent blog post titled ‘The Age of AI Has Begun’, which talked about his meetings with the OpenAI team since 2016.
In his response, Musk mentioned that he remembers his early meetings with Gates and stated that the billionaire’s understanding of AI was limited back then, and he believes it still is. This implies that Musk disagrees with Gates’ views on the potential of AI and the risks associated with it.
About Bill Gates’ recent blog
n a recent blog post, Bill Gates emphasized that we are gradually moving towards a future where AI will play a significant role in various aspects of our lives. He described the development of AI as the second revolutionary technology, with the first being the graphical user interface that he was introduced to in 1980.
In his blog post, Bill Gates highlighted several ways in which AI can be beneficial to humanity. He mentioned that AI has the potential to address some of the world’s biggest inequalities, revolutionize education by transforming the way children learn, improve the healthcare sector, and increase productivity in workplaces.
He also referred to Microsoft’s concept of having a co-pilot, where AI is fully integrated into products like Office to enhance work by assisting with tasks such as writing emails and managing inboxes.
However, Gates also acknowledged the potential risks associated with AI, such as the possibility of it going rogue and perceiving humans as a threat. He emphasized that such concerns were not more urgent today than they were before the recent developments in AI.
Elon Musk’s Criticism of ChatGPT
Elon Musk has been critical of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that became viral after its launch in November 2021. Microsoft has collaborated with ChatGPT, which seemed to have annoyed Musk, who referred to OpenAI (the parent company of ChatGPT) as a firm that is “controlled by Microsoft”.
Musk was one of the co-founders of OpenAI but left the company in 2018 due to a conflict of interest since his other companies were also working on AI technology.
However, a recent Semafor report suggests that the reason for Musk’s departure was not only the conflict of interest but also his desire to lead OpenAI.
Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that Musk’s proposal was opposed by Sam Altman and other co-founders, which eventually led to Musk leaving OpenAI and retracting a significant donation he had pledged earlier.
