AOC criticizes Elon Musk for plans to remove Twitter’s legacy blue checkmarks on April Fool’s day:- Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Twitter’s plans to scrap the legacy blue checkmark.
Elon Musk’s company announced that it is deprecating the legacy verified checkmark from April 1.
Rape. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took aim at Elon Musk’s Twitter over plans to revoke the legacy blue verified checkmark on April 1.
Twitter announced Thursday that it plans to soon phase out a legacy Verified feature that gave users blue checkmarks next to their names. The company said users can sign up for its Twitter Blue subscription program, which costs $8 per month to keep the checkmark.
The AOC tweeted, “Last time they tried this someone pretended to be Eli Lilly and pretended to be insulin free drove their stock price down.”
In a separate tweet, she said: “And they’re rolling it out on April Fool’s Day.”
The AOC was referring to the time in November when two Twitter accounts pretended to be Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical firm that produces insulin.
Both accounts paid for Twitter’s verification feature, which gave them blue ticks, making them appear like Eli Lilly’s official account.
One account tweeted that insulin would be free, while another claimed that the price of the diabetes drug Humalog would rise to $400. According to Forbes, Eli Lilly’s stock fell more than 4% in response.
The company told Insider at the time it was “in talks with Twitter.”
The pharmaceutical giant was not the only business to be trolled by other Twitter accounts. McDonald’s, Nintendo, Tesla, and BP were among the firms impersonated by fake accounts.
Some Twitter users criticized former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and O.J. Simpson.
It’s not the first time AOC, which has a gray checkmark because it’s a government figure, has hit out at Musk and Twitter over its verification system.
“Lmao a billionaire trying to sell people on the idea that “free speech” is actually an $8/mo subscription scheme,” she tweeted. This led to a Twitter spat between the two, with Musk asking her to “pay her $8” and AOC calling her a “union buster with an ego problem”.
After the argument, AOC said it was “easily” having problems with mentions and notifications on its Twitter account.
AOC did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. Twitter automatically responded to Insider’s request for comment with a poo emoji.
